The SCUPA Scoop: Issue 2

Summer is rolling along for SCUPA!  For our June meeting, we heard from Arthur Avitabile and LeAn Rich of A Child’s Haven.

SCUPA has long supported their program through our volunteer efforts and it was interesting to learn more about how they help the children of our community.  A Child’s Haven provides more than just daycare or preschool care.  Their goal is to help the children of the upstate who have developmental delays as a result of their family circumstances and environment overcome those delays and achieve long term success.  Approximately 23% of children in the Greenville County area are developmentally behind; 25% of students don’t graduate from high school.  A Child’s Haven strives to stop the cycle.

They accept children ages 2 through 4 years who are Medicaid eligible.  The children are usually in the program for 6 to 9 months.  Typically they have 30 to 60 children on their waiting list at any given point.  They aim for a very low child to staff ratio so that each child gets the individual attention they need.  Since parents raise their children how they were raised, parents are required to attend parent training sessions and meet with therapists on a regular basis to stop the multi-generational cycle.

For more information about A Child’s Haven and volunteer opportunities, please visit their website: http://www.achildshaven.org/.

SCUPA’s next service project is a school supply drive for A Child’s Haven.  When out shopping for your own kids or simply picking up a few things from Wal-Mart, remember that even the smallest contribution can make a big difference for the children in the program!  This weekend is also tax free weekend and stores are having tons of sales so helping out doesn’t have to cost a lot.

They need:
Book bags (both new and gently used – check those closets at home!)
Notebooks
Notebook paper
Pencils
Pens
Crayons
Colored pencils
Scissors
Glue sticks
Pencil boxes
Hand sanitizer
Tissues
Diapers and Pull-Ups (size large)

Contributions can be brought to the monthly luncheon on August 11, 2011.  If you would like to contribute, but can not attend please contact Dorothy Huskey at (864) 239-4034 or Dorothy.Huskey@mgclaw.com to arrange a pick up or drop off.

Our next social event is a family event at the Greenville Drive game on August 7, 2011 at 4:00 p.m.  Those interested can purchase a lawn seat near the playground when you arrive for the game and keep an eye out for other SCUPA members.  For ticket and facility information, visit the Greenville Drive’s website at http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/index.jsp?sid=t428.

As many of you remember from prior years, SCUPA offered a reduced membership renewal rate for those who renewed their membership at the seminar.  The board has decided to make things a little more convenient for everyone and offer a reduced rate for a 3 month period.  Existing members who send in their renewal application and check from September 1, 2011 through November 30, 2011 will only have to pay $50.00.  Renewals will not be collected at the seminar this year.  Please note that the reduced rate only applies for existing members and not new members joining for the first time.

Remember to register for SCUPA’s 16th annual seminar on October 7, 2011!  Those who register by August 26th will be entered in a drawing for a $100.00 door prize!  Visit our website http://www.scupa.org/ for more details and our registration form.  We look forward to seeing you there!
